Approximately 100 Japanese aprons spanning over 100 years from the Meiji to Heisei eras will be on display!
Aprons serve the purpose of advertising, featuring the store name or logo of a signature product, and are also part of workwear, preventing dirt and reducing strain on the waist.
Aprons were used in stores all over Japan, but reached their peak in the 1960s and 1970s, and have since become less common as lifestyles have changed.
The number of craftsmen capable of making authentic canvas aprons is decreasing, and it seemed as if aprons would disappear altogether. However, in recent years, a culture of aprons has been born in which they are used in completely new situations while retaining their traditional qualities, and the culture is gaining attention from overseas.
We will unravel the commercial history of Japan from the perspective of store design art.
